Modern Education Becomes Affordable in HCMC

Most Vietnamese parents want their children to be successful now and in the future when they grow up. To be successful in the modern global world, a graduate needs to be fluent in English, have a good university degree, be able to demonstrate a range of soft skills, and be confident, open-minded and creative. Good international and bilingual schools are offering this to parents and their children, but a good international or bilingual school is not affordable for an average Vietnamese family. Also, many families are concerned about their children being alienated from their Vietnamese culture and losing their ability to speak and write in Vietnamese when they join international schools.

Such families try to send their children to strong local schools for gifted students, but unfortunately places are very limited, and most families are unable to get a place for their child at such schools. So, parents have to choose between sending their child to a local school or a private school. On graduation, children who attend local schools often struggle to speak and write in English, and lack critical soft skills, and while they are attending the school, they don’t have access to good facilities such as swimming pools, sport fields and modern libraries. Because the private schools’ market is yet to be thoroughly regulated, private schools are of very varying levels, and it is difficult for a parent to know if they offer a good quality education and care for their children. Therefore, the choice of school for a middle class Vietnamese family is very difficult albeit very important, and whatever option they choose, there will be some risks and issues.

However, now there is a solution to this problem: A new group of schools is taking the city by storm and has already pre-enrolled hundreds of families for the next academic year. EMASI schools are led by Dr Huỳnh Công Minh, a long-time Director of DOET in HCMC who led the modernisation of the Vietnamese curriculum for EMASI schools. EMASI stands for English, Maths, Art, Science and IT, and this is what the schools are focusing on, looking to develop students holistically and in a balanced manner. The schools are following the Cambridge English programme to ensure all students are fluent in English, and at least 30% of periods are taught in English for all year groups. All teachers are intensively trained by international education experts in modern teaching methods from developed countries before joining the school (2-months’ training program), because EMASI focuses on developing soft skills and critical attributes, as much as knowledge. In addition, the schools offer outstanding international-standard facilities and a great after-school activities program for all age groups.

The best news is that EMASI schools are affordable, with tuition fees from 95 million per year and a range of significant pre-enrolment discounts that end at the end of December 2018. At the moment, the school is open for pre-enrollment for its Nam Long campus, and unsurprisingly, it had to hire additional admissions staff to be able to cope with high demand for enrollment.
