EMASI Summer School Diary – Week 4

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It’s that time of the week of EMASI Summer School to share some updates on what the students did this week at Summer School.

  • As mentioned before, with Kindergarten students, we aim to get them used to a preschool routine.  Everyone is working at their own pace.  While some children are still getting used to cleaning up after themselves (after lunch or putting toys back), a few children have shown us they can do this independently, which encourages the rest of the class.  Children have become familiar with recycling when every-day, we re-use different resources to make them into arts and crafts.  The week’s highlight for the Kindergarten children was a visit to Family Garden, when they got to plant flowers and feed a range of animals.
  • Elementary and Secondary students had the chance to try out STEAM activities.  Elementary students learned how to make ice cream, but also understood the basics of chemistry: why milk can’t mix at a certain temperature, why salt helps lower the temperature, etc.  On the other hand, secondary students learned how to use the paper microscope to understand basic principles of biology, chemistry, and forensics. Some students got to use their phones to collect samples pictures themselves.
  • Overall in Elementary, the students are forming friendships, learning to play, agree and disagree in English. This can be hard for primary students, but our teachers and teaching assistants work with every child to help them express themselves using words day by day.
  • In PE, secondary students have been working sport-specific skills: improving their shooting, dribbling, passing and kicking. Younger students have developed dance movements, worked with different beats, learned to listen and move at the right beat, and memorized short routines.

Only one reminder from the school this week:

  • I would like to reiterate again that we do not allow cell phones to be used for non-educational purposes.  Unfortunately, we continue to confiscate student phones which can be collected at the end of the day (at 4.15pm) at the reception area.

Wishing everyone a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Lila Rodriguez
